Dear friends -
I am sorry to announce that MoBu Kids is permanently closed and will not be reopening after the governor lifts the shutdown order. I really would love to keep our location open, but I've been having to make some difficult choices lately.
When I opened the new location in September 2018 I knew it would take awhile to get revenue flowing. Small businesses typically take a few years to reach a sustainable level of income. I was not worried as I had a financial cushion to cover the gap. The government shutdown that happened three months later dramatically impacted the Northern Virginia economy and forced me to use that nest egg to cover costs and I kept the doors open over those three months despite having almost no income. Things started improving as people went back to work and the in past six months saw a return to the expected income trajectory. Enter: COVID-19. When the Virginia governor mandated all entertainment facilities shutdown due to COVID, I had zero cash on hand to weather this financial storm.
I applied for Small Business Administration loans, both the Economic Impact Disaster Loan and the Paycheck Protection Program, but received neither before funding ran out. I realize another measure is in the works and may be enacted this week but even if I'm approved for both of those, the amount that MoBu Kids qualifies for is not enough to tide us over until we can reopen. Additionally, I'm not sure the consumer demand for an indoor playground is going to bounce back in a few months. People are concerned for the safety and health of their families and many are out of work (including all of my employees).
I am scrambling (well, scrounging is a more appropriate term) for funding to refund families who have put down deposits for birthday parties and those who have enrolled in summer camps. As you know, MoBu Kids is a family business run by one family - mine. It's not a franchise or a national brand, it's just one small, independent, locally owned business. I beg you to be patient with me during the coming weeks as I sell off our assets to free up some capital.
Thank you again for your love and support. I loved being a part of of your families and I am truly going to miss being a part of the Falls Church community. If you need assistance or to contact me, please send an email to info@ mobukids.com.
With love - Jill
